P. M. Harman: The Natural Philosophy of James Clerk Maxwell

The Natural Philosophy of James Clerk Maxwell

Description

This book provides an introductory yet comprehensive account of James Clerk Maxwell's (1831-79) physics and worldview. The argument is structured by a focus on the fundamental themes which shaped Maxwell's science: analogy and geometry, models and mechanical explanation, statistical representation and the limitations of dynamical reasoning, and the relation between physical theory and its mathematical description. This approach, which considers his physics as a whole, bridges the disjunction between Maxwell's greatest contributions: the concept of the electromagnetic field and the kinetic theory of gases. Maxwell's work and ideas are viewed historically in terms of his indebtedness to scientific and cultural traditions, of Edinburgh experimental physics, and of Cambridge mathematics and philosophy of science, which nurtured his career.

An innovative, developmental approach to teaching phonics and spelling. This classroom resource contains lessons in which students select letters to build short and long words. It also includes effective tools for strengthening spelling and phonics skills. Making Words is a multilevel book that explores words and letter patterns while increasing vocabularies. Meet BOULDER! He turns into a bulldozer and works with his team, the RESCUE BOTS. After rescuing a pet cat from a tree, BOULDER wants a pet of his own-so he decides to adopt the lion from the zoo! But "Whiskers" is hard to keep track of! BOULDER's human friend Cody offers him a potted plant as a more suitable pet. Laugh out loud with this fun and simple story based on the show! As simple as they are, sandwiches seem to inspire unusual devotion and bitter argument. Debates have lasted decades over the best way to prepare a club, what a true Philly cheesesteak really is, or who deserves credit for inventing the hamburger. But why shouldn't people be passionate about sandwiches? They're a food that's threaded The Natural Philosophy of James Clerk Maxwell free ebook its way into the lives and cuisine of virtually every nation and culture where bread enters the daily diet. From Europe to South America, India to Vietnam, the hamburger and BLT to the wada pav and banh mi, sandwiches are often representative of regional and national identity--the food of the everyman. They reflect the history of the modern age, the story of the working class, and the evolution of mass-produced eats. From the invention of sliced bread to the hamburger assembly lines of modern fast food, sandwiches have unceremoniously taken us into the 21st century in the shadows of more brilliant symbols.

Pierre Bourdieu,Jean Claude Passeron,Denis Saint-Martin: Academic Discourse : Linguistic Misunderstanding and Professorial Power

Academic Discourse : Linguistic Misunderstanding and Professorial Power

Description

Education depends crucially on language: knowledge and skills are taught largely through a process of linguistic exchange. But how much of the language used by teachers and professors is actually understood by students? To what extent does the social background of students affect their capacity to understand the language used in the classroom or the lecture hall? Why do students and teachers over-estimate the success of the educational process and under-estimate the degree of misunderstanding involved? In this important work Pierre Bourdieu and his associates explore these and other questions through a careful study of the role of language and linguistic misunderstanding in the teaching contexts of higher education. They study the extent to which university students actually understand the academic discourse they hear in lectures, as well as the factors that influence the ways in which students' essays are assessed. They also examine the extent to which the mastery and the misunderstanding of academic discourse depends on the social background of the individuals concerned. Drawing on empirical research and developing a distinctive theoretical perspective, Bourdieu and his associates argue that academic discourse is a medium of communication that both expresses and reproduces a relation of pedagogical power and respect. Academic Discourse is an important part of the work of Bourdieu and his associates on culture and education and is complementary to some of their most well-known books, such as Reproduction, The Inheritors and Homo Academicus. This translation will be welcomed not only by scholars interested in the development of Bourdieu's work, but also by students of sociology, education and applied linguistics and by teachers and others concerned with the role of language and power in the process of education.

Paul Robeson,Sterling Stuckey: Here I Stand

Here I Stand

Description

Robeson's international achievements as a singer and actor in starring roles on stage and screen made him the most celebrated black American of his day, but his outspoken criticism of racism in the United States, his strong support of African independence, and his fascination with the Soviet Union placed him under the debilitating scrutiny of McCarthyism. Blacklisted, his famed voice silenced, he wrote Here I Stand as a bold answer to his accusers. It remains today a defiant challenge to the prevailing fear and racism that continues to characterize American society.

Theodore Dalrymple: The New Vichy Syndrome: Why European Intellectuals Surrender to Barbarism

The New Vichy Syndrome: Why European Intellectuals Surrender to Barbarism

Description

Western Europe is in a strangely neurotic condition of being smug and terrified at the same time. On the one hand, Europeans believe they have at last created an ideal social and political system in which man can live comfortably. In many ways, things have never been better on the old continent. On the other hand, there is growing anxiety that Europe is quickly falling behind in an aggressive, globalized world. Europe is at the forefront of nothing, its demographics are rapidly transforming in unsettling ways, and the ancient threat of barbarian invasion has resurfaced in a fresh manifestation. In The New Vichy Syndrome, Theodore Dalrymple traces this malaise back to the great conflicts of the last century and their devastating effects upon the European psyche. From issues of religion, class, colonialism, and nationalism, Europeans hold a "miserablist" view of their history, one that alternates between indifference and outright contempt of the past. Today's Europeans no longer believe in anything but personal economic security, an increased standard of living, shorter working hours, and long vacations in exotic locales. The result, Dalrymple asserts, is an unwillingness to preserve European achievements and the dismantling of western culture by Europeans themselves. As vapid hedonism and aggressive Islamism fill this cultural void, Europeans have no one else to blame for their plight.

Essential Wisdom for a Life Well Lived with Three New Chapters Included [STAR] Brilliantly realized, complete, and complex. The novel is rich with detail, and both the Brooklyn and Paris settings provide important grounding for the haunting and beautifully told story. "Kirkus Reviews," Starred" These and other daring stories form a mesmerizing tapestry of revelatory fiction by an unforgettable writer. "From the Hardcover edition." The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. "Lady Midnight" is a Shadowhunters novel. In "American Power", Mitch Epstein investigates notions of power, both electrical and political. His focus is on energy how it gets made, how it gets used, and the ramifications of both. From 2003 to 2008, he photographed at and around sites where fossil fuel, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and solar power are produced in the United States. The resulting photographs contain Epstein's signature complex wit, surprising detail, and formal rigor. These pictures illuminate The New Vichy Syndrome: Why European Intellectuals Surrender to Barbarism download ebook pdf the intersection between American society and American landscape. Here is a portrait of early 21st century America, as it clings to past comforts and gropes for a more sensible future. In an accompanying essay, Epstein discusses his method, and how making these photographs led him to think harder about the artists role in a country teetering between collapse and transformation.

The Bliss of Inner Fire: Heart Practice of the Six Yogas of Naropa

Description

In the classic bestseller, "Introduction to Tantra," Lama Yeshe offered a profound and wonderfully clear glimpse into the sophisticated practices of Tibetan Buddhist tantra. This present book, the last major teachings of this great lama, opens up the world of advanced practices for Highest Yoga Tantra initiates in much the same way his earlier work opened up the world of tantra in general. Following Je Tsongkhapa's (1357-1419 C.E.) text "Having the Three Convictions," Lama Yeshe introduces the renowned Six Yogas of Naropa, focusing mainly on the first of these six, the practice of inner fire ("tummo"). Mastery of inner fire quickly brings the mind to its most refined and penetrating state--the experience of clear light, an extra-ordinarily powerful state of mind that is unequaled in its ability to directly realize ultimate reality. Lama Yeshe felt that twentieth-century Westerners could easily grasp the often misunderstood ideas of this esoteric tradition: "We really need tantra these days because there is a tremendous explosion of delusion and distraction.and we need the atomic energy of inner fire to blast us out of our delusion." Lama Yeshe's aim was for his students to actually taste the experience of inner fire rather than merely gain an intellectual understanding. Lama's own realization of the transformative power of these practices comes through, inspiring his students to discover for themselves their own capacity for inexhaustible bliss.

Richard Rohr: Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality

Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality

Description

Only when the two come together, inner and outer authority, do we have true spiritual wisdom. We have for too long insisted on outer authority alone, without any teaching of prayer, inner journey and maturing consciousness. The results for the world and for religion have been disastrous.I offer these reflections to again unite what should never have been separated: sacred Scripture and Christian spirituality. From the Introduction In this exploration of central themes of Scripture, Richard Rohr transforms the written word, discovering in these ancient texts a new and vital meaning, relevant and essential for modern Christians. He uncovers what the Bible says about morality, power, wisdom and the generosity of God in a manner that demands a life-changing response from believers. Rohr offers his readers a Christian vision of abundance, grace and joy to counteract a world filled with scarcity, judgment and feara vision that can revolutionize how we relate to ourselves, others and the world."

The Vickers-Maxim Machine Gun

Description

The world's first self-powered machine gun, the Maxim gun became a potent symbol of Victorian colonialism in the closing years of the 19th century. It was the brainchild of Sir Hiram Maxim, the American-born firearms inventor who founded the company bearing his name with financing from Albert Vickers, who became the company's chairman; Maxim's company was absorbed by Vickers, Sons and Company in 1897. Subsequent variants in British, German and Russian service - the .303in Vickers (1912), 7.92mm MG 08 (1908) and 7.62mm PM M1910, respectively - dominated both the Eastern and Western Fronts during World War I and soldiered on into World War II, while the Vickers remained in front-line British service essentially unchanged until 1968. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and written by a noted authority, this is the engaging story of the Maxim and its descendants, the innovative rapid-fire weapons that saw combat with British, German, Russian and other forces in the late Victorian era and throughout the world wars.

Saint's Blood

Description

The Greatcoats are back - and this time it's personal. How do you kill a Saint? Falcio, Brasti and Kest are about to find out - someone is doing just that, and they've started with a friend. The Dukes were already looking for ways to weasel out of their promise to put Aline on her father's throne - but with Saints turning up dead, rumour are spreading that the Gods themselves oppose her ascension. To make matters worse, the churches are also pushing for control and have brought back their own military orders - including church knights and, worst of all, the Inquisitors, who have their own, much harsher form of justice. The only way Falcio can stop the country turning into a vicious theocracy is to find the Saint-killer - and his only clue is the iron mask encasing the head of the Saint of Mercy. And even if he can find the murderer, he will still have to face them in battle - and this may be a duel that no swordsman, no matter how skilled, can win.

When goofy inventor Senbei Norimaki creates a precocious robot named Arale, his masterpiece turns out to be more than he bargained for! Upending your assumptions about your online life and forever changing the way you think about the technology that you, your friends and your family use, The Cyber Effect offers a fascinating and chilling look at a future we can still do something about. Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness". "My baby boy..." she whispers before dying. Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire. When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and Fatal Traps for Helicopter Pilots download epub body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an axe, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House. While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Mary Gaitskill: The Mare

The Mare

Description

Following her National Book Award nominated "Veronica, "here is Mary Gaitskill s most poignant and powerful work yet the story of a Dominican girl, the Anglo woman who introduces her to riding, and the horse who changes everything for her. Velveteen Vargas is eleven years old, a Fresh Air Fund kid from Brooklyn. Her host family is a couple in upstate New York: Ginger, a failed artist and shakily recovered alcoholic, and her academic husband, Paul, who wonder what it will mean to make a difference in such a contrived situation. Gaitskill illuminates their shifting relationship with Velvet over several years, as well as Velvet s encounter with the horses at the stable down the road especially with an abused, unruly mare called Fugly Girl. With strong supporting characters Velvet s abusive mother, an eccentric horse trainer, a charismatic older boy who awakens Velvet s nascent passion "The Mare" traces Velvet s journey between the vital, violent world of the inner city and the world of the small-town stable. In Gaitskill s hands, the timeless story of a girl and a horse is joined with a timely story of people from different races and classes trying to meet one another honestly. "The Mare" is raw, heart-stirring, and original."

This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor

Description

In This Common Secret Dr. Susan Wicklund chronicles her emotional and dramatic twenty-year career on the front lines of the abortion war. Growing up in working class, rural Wisconsin, Wicklund had her own painful abortion at a young age. It was not until she became a doctor that she realized how many women shared her ordeal of an unwanted pregnancy--and how hidden this common experience remains. This is the story of Susan's love for a profession that means listening to women and helping them through one of the most pivotal and controversial events in their lives. Hers is also a calling that means sleeping on planes and commuting between clinics in different states--and that requires her to wear a bulletproof vest and to carry a .38 caliber revolver. This is also the story of the women whom Susan serves, women whose options are increasingly limited. Through these intimate, complicated, and inspiring accounts, Wicklund reveals the truth about the women's clinics that anti-abortion activists portray as little more than slaughterhouses for the unborn. As we enter the most fevered political fight over abortion America has ever seen, this raw and powerful memoir shows us what is at stake.
